Coastal management

The North East Coastal Group(NECG) provides a strategic consultative body for the North East of England from the Scottish Borders southwards to Gibralter Point in North East Lincolnshire.

The group has a wide membership of public maritime stakeholders in the North East including all the coastal councilsand the Environment Agency. It is the lead organisation on shoreline management planning for the length of this coastline. The group has close collaberation with:

  • DEFRA
  • Marine Management
  • Organisation
  • Natural England
  • North Yorks Moors National
  • Park
  • North Yorkshire and Cleveland
  • Coastal Forum
  • The National Trust
  • Yorkshire Forward
  • Parish Councils and of course
  • Scarborough Borough Council.

The NECG is one of seven national strategic coastal groups and is an important organisation in terms of national and regional coastalmanagement. Chairman John Riby, who also reperesents Scarborough Borough Council at the Local Government Association’s Special Interest Group on coastal issues says,

“I am keen to support any activity on the coast which is environmentally acceptable, technically sound, sustainable and cost effective.

“I see offshore wind energy as potentially meeting all of these criteria and a prudent harnessing of a natural resource,an important element in the Nation's future energy supplies.NECG would be happy to work with the industry to help facilitate this exciting initiative”.
