Maritime training

Working with the Marine Safety College in South Shields, the Council has established a Training Module using Virtual Technology enabling pilots to experience and practice piloting a boat into the Harbour in all weather conditions.

The facilities available at the College include:

  • A Marine Simulation Department containing two 360 degree fullmission bridges and 12 other integrated bridges
  • An integrated full-mission engine room and associated engine work station rooms
  • An extensive VTS simulator system and fully equipped Navigation Aid Laboratory
  • A Marine Safety Training Centre which provides realistic survival training with environmental pool, helicopter escape module and jetty with survival training craft
  • A Fire Training Centre with a fullsized smoke chamber.

Whitby and District Fishing Industry Training School

Established in 2002 and ideally located situated in the Mission to Seafarers' Centre adjacent to the fish quay, the school, which is mainly funded via the Learning and Skills Council and the Sea Fish Industry Authority, is going from strength to strength.
