Sustainability in Whitby and Scarborough
As the birth place of the explorer, Captain James Cook, and the home of William Smith’s Rotunda Museum the Borough of Scarborough has been long associated with the advancement of scientific knowledge and innovation in the energy industry.
A signatory to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change and the 10:10, the Council is committed to promoting the delivery of carbon reduction in line with UK Government Targets.
We recognise that the wind farm industry offers significant potential to assist promote the long term objectives within the Borough’s Sustainable Community Strategy in particular:
- Retaining quality environments by protecting local and global environments through the reduction in the need to burn fossil fuels carbon creation. Building Prosperous Communities through the strategic aims of
- Diversification of the economy through promoting new employment in the low carbon technologies sector.
- Developing Business Tourism
- Creating stronger links between the university and business communities to help research and develop new enterprises for the Borough.
- Improving skill levels to enable local people to both enter the labour market and progress within it.
The Council’s Land Planning and Development strategies aim to support these economic objectives and ensure that appropriate land is made available for economic development in locations with good access and the capacity to provide suitable premises for business growth.
The publicly owned Harbours of Whitby and Scarborough offer unrivalled access to the sites identified off the North Yorkshire Coast for the development of offshore wind. CE Electric UK have an easement to carry high voltage electricity along the former Scarborough to Whitby Railway.
